Background

Christopher R. Deubert is an attorney specializing in sports law and civil litigation, including securities and labor and employment litigation. His sports practice focuses primarily on representing NFL players in League matters, including appeals for Commissioner Discipline, under the NFL’s Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse and Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, and related litigation. Chris also represents NFL players and agents in disputes pursuant to the NFLPA’s arbitration procedures. Past clients include a PGA TOUR member, NBA player, an NCAA Division I student-athlete, a Players Association employee, and sports agents and agencies. Chris has also prepared salary arbitration cases and conducted related research for a MLB club, currently conducts research on behalf of the Sports Lawyers Association, previously worked for one of the largest NFL-player representation firms, performing contract, statistical, and legal analysis, and he performed similar work during an internship with the New York Jets.

From May 2014 to May 2017, Chris was the Senior Law and Ethics Associate for the Law and Ethics Initiative of the Football Players Health Study at Harvard University. The Football Players Health Study is a long-term research project funded pursuant to an agreement with (but independent of) the NFLPA designed to improve the health and wellbeing of current, former, and future NFL players. The Law & Ethics Initiative studied legal and ethical issues affecting NFL player health and made appropriate recommendations. Chris co-authored multiple publications aimed at improving NFL player health, including a 493-page legal and ethical analysis of the obligations and practices of 20 different stakeholders in player health and a 256-page analysis comparing the health-related policies and practices of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, CFL, and MLS. The publications garnered significant public attention, including coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated, and on ESPN.
